Levering-Lewis has written a lot about Du Bois. In this interview he points out the long life of the man and evolving politics. Even though Du Bois theory and method evolved, Levering-Lewis describes a constant "principled consistency against racism [and for] economic justice." in his subject. Du Bois "expatriated himself to Ghana" where he died. Du Bois death was announced at the Reflecting Pool by Roy Wilkins in 1963 just before King spoke. Du Bois joined the CPUSA in October 1960 at nadir of the party because the was suspicious of Cold War politics and the Civil Rights movement. In death he was memorialized by his comrades Khrushchev, Zhou, Mao and Gus Hall. Levering Lewis called Du Bois "useful" to the Communists. Du Bois book on reconstruction allows American history to be more "nuanced" than the white redemption standard narrative. His correspondence and the personal Souls of Black Folk encourage psychological reconstructions of his motivation. He also cultivated a public image. These two combined still have political power.
