noose lapel pin
I. introduction:
Israel passed "Death Penalty for Terrorists Law, 5786-2026" in March 2026. [1] This framework for capital punishment is racialized--there are different rules for Israelis and Palestinians (legally Arab Israeli). This law is one among many incongruities between Israeli theocracy and democratic principles concerning Palestinians. The legislation was introduced to the Knesset in December 2025. While Israeli citizens supported the bill it was met with international scrutiny by human rights organizations and the press. Proponents of the bill from the political right wore noose lapel pins during the months of lobbying. These pins were the same color as the yellow ribbon lapel pins worn after October 7, 2023 for the return of hostages by Hamas. The cynical inversion of the lapel pin, like the anti-democratic version of democracy, represents a society that values security over liberalism. Evidence of fascistic tendencies within Israeli society contradict their claims to democratic values. The noose lapel pin is one small symbol of a failed liberal society retreating in the face of state terror.
Affiliation is a primary traditional purpose of the lapel pin with a flag. The original Gilded Age patent for the lapel pin was designed around partisan politics. In America, the flag lapel pin has been part of political language ever since it was invented. After September 11, 2001 it became de facto part of every lapel in Washington.
The pin can also represent voluntary associations like universities, fraternal orders and military service. It can be an in group shibboleth--like class rings, tie knots or tattoos. The lapel pin can also be a sign of public devotion. It can be a universal signifier like a crucifix, hijab or yarmulke worn in public. The pin can also be a sign of enlistment like the French Revolutionary cockade.
In capitalist society, the lapel pin is also a tool for appeal. The suit's lapel is valuable space to become commodity. Football announcers wear appeals for children's hospitals on their jackets mimicking fiduciaries. Even in the sarcastic neoliberal hell of charity--an appeal for others is different than affiliations/associations with one's self.
The fourth message that lapel pins convey is aesthetics. Even decorations have messages. There is a Crown Jewel stolen from every colony. An aesthete's boutonnière marks formality, a hippie's buttonhole flower represents peace. Contextualizing these four angles--affiliations, associations, appeals and aesthetics--helps define the message and the language of its messenger. [2]
II. remembrance poppy:
Take, for instance, the remembrance poppy, a lapel pin ubiquitous in the Anglosphere which blooms on or around November eleventh (aka: Armistice Day). The poppy is affiliated with the British commonwealth and WWI. French allies use the Bleuet de France. In America it is associated with Veterans of Foreign Wars and Memorial Day. The VFW holds the 1923 patent for "Buddy Poppies." Charitable appeals are made by the VFW using these poppies assembled by disabled veterans. A non-commercial appeal is to global peace. Aesthetically the poppies evoke a poem by John McCrae "In Flanders Fields" (8 December 1915). Symbolizing this human sentiment, a century of labor and meaning is embedded in the remembrance poppy's affiliation, association, appeal and aesthetic.
III. noose lapel pin:
The noose lapel pin might be the same jewelry as the remembrance poppy or yellow ribbon but it has a depraved and inverted message in comparison. It is affiliated with the colonial state of Israel, a Mediterranean enclave of Eastern Europeans founded in 1948 through the guilt of the German Holocaust, the ongoing collapse of British (and Ottoman) empire and the terror of the Palestinian Nakba. The irony of the Israeli state is more than just birthright outsiders, genocidal victims and democratic theocracy. Israel's version of manifest destiny -- lebensraum is based on ancient claims from the Torah -- not enlightenment civilization or modern genetics. In the adolescent America this ancient Biblical language resonates with the influential class of Dispensationalist Evangelical Christians that dominate the Republican party and caucus with the Democrats. This Judeo-Christian alliance has defined international hegemony for decades. The lapel pin doesn't represent every Israeli or American. But, it is only affiliated with the Zionist political ideology of both.
Specifically this lapel pin is associated with the ultranationalist Otzma Yehudit political party leader Ben Gvir. This party and their allies appeal for the execution of Palestinian "terrorists" who "negate the existence of the State of Israel." Creating laws that target racial groups is not a feature of functioning democracies. Aesthetically the noose lapel pin lacks subtlety, for one. It is reminiscent of spooky military hardware perhaps passed down through the Prussian Hussars and German Totenkopf. Reusing the yellow of prisoner negotiation to advocate terrorist execution is an inverted and unserious aesthetic. From the old testament viewpoint, it might be retributive justice. This is embodied by Son Har-Melech, one of the chief lobbyists of the bill, whose husband was killed by "terrorists" in 2003.
Israel owes its existence to two different phenomena--one is the guilt of state liberalism and the other is the triumph of imperial theocracy. The old testament world view allows genocide, colonialism, state executions and is also the state's only claim to the land upon which it exists (and exclusion of Palestinians). If Israel were treated with the western liberal values that created it after WWII then democracy should replace theocracy and the United Nations rules based order must apply to settlements and borders including those with Lebanon, Syria, Egypt and Palestine. If "Arab Israelis" were allowed to vote then the state would no longer serve the theological wack jobs in the Israel Lobby, Knesset and Congress. This is unique type of state that can probably only exist when privileged by a hegemon.
The ethics and process of state execution has changed since the old testament. Ben Gvir boasts, "commitment to the demand for the death penalty" to send "a clear message that terrorists are deserving of death." He promoted the noose, "the gallows, the electric chair and...euthanasia" (possibly alluding to gas chambers) during the first hearing of the bill. [3] Methods were expanded because the "national doctors' union has refused to carry out lethal injections." [4]
Old testament retributive justice has potential to be different than western show trials and euthanasia. A proper old Testament hanging (Deuteronomy 21:22-23) or execution (Genesis 40:19-22) is a punishment that includes public display of the body. This is fundamentally different than the modern American standard of private executions. Even a televised execution (like that proposed by Timothy McVeigh) probably wouldn't linger on the dead body in America. More important is the nature of the crime and victim. Executions in the Torah are for crimes against God and his kingdom and people. Western liberal executions are for crimes are against laws, the constitution or citizens. Palestinians are not chosen people or citizens so they are in a tenuous legal position in either of these frameworks.
In the three months between the bill's introduction and passage there has been much negative press about the law symbolized by the noose lapel pin. The law exists within the depraved context of a genocidal, colonial state. This state exists within the broader "rules-based" framework immunized by the security council. Focusing on the pin can both limit the discussion to jewelry and also connect it the systemic contradiction that is the modern state of Israel. The right wing press described the pin a "provocative statement." [5] The left compared the pins to swastikas. [6] The center was concerned the law was "unlikely to ever apply to Jewish extremists who commit similar crimes." [7]
The issues up for debate as the bill materialized concerned solitary confinement, a maximum of 90 days on death row, execution by "simple majority" instead of "unanimity," empowering military courts for capital crimes and canceling appeals. [8] This set of rules only applies to the Palestinian racial minority within "Judea and Samaria" which is a territory that Israel disputes with the international community. [9] The incongruity between international norms and Israeli privilege is not the only one represented by the noose lapel pin.
Another incongruity is lack of humanism shown by the ultranationalist cadre upon the bills passage following twelve hours of debate. The conservatives uncorked champagne to celebrate the "major victory" with "jubilant..." Ben Gvir "...sporting the golden noose-shaped lapel pin he and other advocates of the measure have donned to symbolize their campaign for the death penalty." [10] The death penalty of western liberalism seems somber compared to this Israeli circus of ethnic cleansing. Remember, the Israelis are both an ancient and adolescent state. The exuberance of their settler colonialism is a young empire stretching out: like the American Homestead period or Scramble for Africa. It is hypocritical for western liberals to chastise Israel for studying from the masters. The irony of holocaust victims ethnically cleansing Biblically designated land is more than a noose made to look like a yellow hostage ribbon but it is one way to look at it.

This was a "major victory for...Ben Gvir...who immediately handed out champagne as members of the coalition celebrated its passage following nearly twelve hours of debate...the law effectively enshrines capital punishment for Palestinians alone, as it explicitly excludes Israeli citizens or residents, and only Palestinians are tried in military courts. Israelis are tried in civilian courts."
