words:
on sincerity
The post-modern fear is in sincerity:
"i can't tell if he's being serious?"
every creation is judged by people mired in technique
as if mine were earnest outsider art
while theirs is authentic, inspired by Dante himself.
I stopped taking pictures two years ago
after hauling my old dSLR from the badlands to the coasts
trying to capture something fading
now everything is cellphones, doorbells, dashcams and drones
and that which was is gone forever.
A cop called me to ask what I was doing three nights ago
"time lapse recording steam at the power plant"
as if there were no more artists
and terror was the only way to tell a story
when in Rome.
I know a guy that takes pictures underwater
with a snorkel and special plastic case
the panopticon hasn't submerged all its subjects
and won't until--like Gary Larson or Black Francis--
the little fishies come up here and record us.
